Cathy’s Story - Diagnosed with breast cancer

Like anyone who is told they have cancer, the diagnosis of breast cancer came as a huge shock to Cathy.

Throughout her treatment, Cathy was determined to do what she could to stay well and keep control of her health as much as possible.

In this short video, Cathy shares some of her story and reflects on the services that helped to look after her while she was going though her chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

“Being diagnosed with cancer is overwhelming. It's an overwhelming experience because I guess your mind races through all of the different possibilities” Cathy reflects.

I first heard about Lift on my first day of having chemo. The breast care nurses gave me a Lift brochure and at that time I was looking to take on some support, so I rang Lift and booked an appointment.

Cathy utilised several of the services at Lift including exercise medicine, lymphoedema screening, dietetics and clinical psychology.

“The dietician really helped me because I was having a lot of steroids as part of my treatment.”

“I also found talking to the psychologist really fantastic. It’s become even more important since treatment has finished for me, because I was so focused on treatment and its progress and getting to the end, that I didn't really have a lot of headspace to think about, well, what happens after that. It's been invaluable talking to the psychologist.”

“I would definitely recommend Lift and I have recommended it to a couple of friends who are now coming and I can't speak highly enough of it.

“Lift encapsulates the cancer experience in a very positive way. Lift's approach is focused on the person coming in. It's not about just your cancer.”
