The effects of supervised exercise program on cancer disease progression outcomes – COSA Presentation
Lift is partnering with Adelaide Cancer Centre to undertake a study looking at the possible effects of a supervised exercise program on cancer treatment outcomes. It is well established that exercise can benefit many aspects of a patients journey through cancer treatment and recovery. These benefits include improved quality of life, fatigue, tolerance to chemotherapy to name but a few. This study is the first of its kind to look at the potential effects of exercise on the tumour itself. It is based on promising pre-clinical (laboratory-based) studies which show that structured exercise can limit tumour growth, enhance the anti-cancer effects of chemotherapy and reduce tumour spread.
The study is retrospective and observational in nature. This means that it is using data (primarily CT scan results) that already exist as part of standard care. It therefore does not affect the management of patients undergoing cancer treatment at ACC. However, it is hoped that the results will help to further optimize the management of patients in the future.
The summary of this study proposal has been accepted as a poster presentation at the upcoming Annual Scientific Meeting of the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA) being held in Adelaide later this month.
